Summary

Description

The Pleasant Home in Oak Park, a national landmark (1897). George W. Maher worked in Joseph L. Silsbee's firm in Chicago, working as a draftsmen alongside Frank Lloyd Wright and George Grant Elmslie. In 1888, Maher left the firm to start his own practice. Maher was one of the biggest proponents of the Arts and Crafts Movement and was a leader in its design. He was also strongly influenced by the emerging Prairie Style and incorporated some of its elements into his Arts & Crafts designs; this influence is so strong in the Pleasant Home that it is considered among the early examples of Prairie Style architecture that wasn't developed by the Prairie School group of architects.

The house was built for John Farson, a banker. He owned five of the first fifteen automobiles in Oak Park, and became president of the Chicago Auto Club. After his death, the house was sold to Herbert S. Mills, nicknamed the Peanut King after he cornered the world market on Spanish peanuts. He later developed the first coin-operated slot automatic slot machine, and his Mills Novelty Company sold 80% of the nations slot machines
