  • 1 Ahmedabad — Manchester of the East, commercial capital of Gujarat, home of Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashram.
  • 2 Anand (The Milk City) — the administrative centre of Anand District.
  • 3 Dabhoi — site of major Jain pilgrimage
  • 4 Karamsad Karamsad on Wikipedia — home of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who was popularly known as Iron Man of India.
  • 5 Khambhat (Cambay) — former port town at the bay of Khambhat.
  • 6 Kheda Kheda on Wikipedia (Kaira) — town located on the banks of the rivers "Vatrak" and "Shedhi". From here Gandhi launched a campaign against British taxes.
  • 7 Nadiad — a city where the Santaram Mandir (Hindu temple) is located.
  • 8 Tajpur — a village in Prantij Taluka in Sabar Kantha District of Gujarat State
  • 9 Vadodara (Baroda) — Cultured City, Oxford of Gujarat.

Central Gujarat is the home of the industrial cities like Ahmedabad and Vadodara (Baroda). Ahmedabad is known as the Manchester of the East, while Vadodara is known as the Oxford of Gujarat.

Most of the highways that connect Gujarat with the rest of India goes through this region.

By train[edit]

There are trains from and to Mumbai (500 km) and New Delhi (1000 km) and other big cities of India several times a day going to Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Get around[edit]

As in the rest of Gujarat, most people in this region travel by private buses or by taxi, although getting around by train is possible. Ahmedabad and Vadodara are big stations in the Indian Railways Network.

  • Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Indology Museum, R Gujrat University, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad. Tu-Su 10:30 to 17:30, closed on public holidays. The museum covers a wide variety of topics from Buddhism, Jainism and its darshans, grammar, tantra and poetics to Vedas, agama to the different branches of Indian philosophy. It is learnt that this museum has the largest collection of Jain scripts which come around 75, 000 manuscripts with 500 illustrated versions and 45,000 printed books. Free.
