Dharwad and Hubli are twin cities of Karnataka. While Dharwad is educational and cultural centre , Hubbali is commercial hub. These cities have municipal corporation by the name Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC). Dharwar was part of Bombay Presidency during British rule of India. Dharwad is known as the 'Oxford of Karnataka' due to its universities and colleges.

Dharwad is connected to Karnataka's state capital Bangalore, Pune and Mumbai which is the commercial capital of India by National Highway 48 (NH 48) which was previously known as Pune-Bangalore (PB) road.

Also National highway 52 (NH 52) connects Hubli Dharwad to National highway 66 near Ankola via Kalaghatgi and Yellapura. National highway 52 connects Hubli to Solapur via Navalgund, Naragund,Kerur, Bagalkote, Bilgi cross, Kolhar, Bijapur, Horti and Zalki on another side.

National highway 67 (NH 67) connects Hubli twin city of Dharwad to Proddatur in Andhra Pradesh state via Shiraguppi, Annigeri, Hulkoti, Gadag, Lakkundi, Koppal, Hosapete, Toranagallu, Kudtani, Ballari ,Guntakal, Gooty, Anikireddypalli, Kolimingudla and Jammalamadugu.

By bus

Buses run by Karnataka state government undertakings NWKRTC, NEKRTC, KSRTC connect Dharwad to various cities and towns of Karnataka , Goa and Maharashtra state. There are daily buses from Bengaluru, Mangalore, Udupi, Davangere, Karwar, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Hosapete, Ballari, Goa via Ponda, Mumbai, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur to Dharwad city. There is a NWKRTC bus service at the frequency of 15 minutes from the city of Belgaum, Karnataka. Private buses also connect Dharwad to Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, Pune and Udupi.

By rail

Dharwad has a railway station. Nearby Hubli Junction at a distance of 15 Kilometres is the headquarters of South Western Railway (SWR) zone of Indian Railways. One can get trains from Madgaon (Goa), Kolhapur, Miraj, Pune , Mumbai, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Davangeri to Dharwad.

By plane

Hubli airport is 15 km from Dharwad. Hubli is connected to Bengaluru and Mumbai by flights.

There are city buses running at the frequency of 2 minutes between Hubballi and Dharwad. Also from Dharwad Central Bus Terminus (CBT) to various localities of Dharwad. One can hire autorickshaws to visit different places within city limits. Private taxis are also available.
