Neuss is a city of 154,000 people (2019) across the Rhine river from Düsseldorf in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. It is known for its historic Roman sites, and for the annual Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest. Neuss and Trier share the title of "Germany's oldest city"; and in 1984 Neuss celebrated the 2000th anniversary of its founding in 16 BCE.

Get in[edit]

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS IATA) is just 15 kilometers from Neuss downtown. There is a direct S-Bahn connection from the airport terminal to Neuss main station every 20 minutes, taking half an hour.

Neuss is not served by intercity trains. There are however regional and local trains frequently arriving from Düsseldorf (taking 10–15 minutes), Cologne (half an hour), Mönchengladbach (15 minutes), Krefeld (15–20 minutes), Wuppertal (35 minutes), Hagen (one hour) Aachen (70 minutes), Kleve (1½ hours), and Venlo (Netherlands; 50 minutes). When traveling from further-away places you will usually have to change in Düsseldorf.

Get around[edit]

Stadtwerke Neuss operate 12 city bus routes. These run in a star shape (exceptions 850 (T), 857T, 858) towards the city center. For night owls, there are 6 overnight express lines to almost all parts of the city at 01:05, 02:05 and 03:05 from the Zolltor stop in the city centre on the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday, as well as before public holidays. In order to save costs, it is necessary on many bus routes on weekends in the morning hours until around 08:00 to reserve the desired routes by telephone, as these only run when required (so-called taxi buses). Furthermore, the BVR (Busverkehr Rheinland), the Rheinbahn, and the NEW MöBus operate 15 bus routes that connect the city of Neuss with the cities of its district, as well as with the independent cities of Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach.

Several tram lines (709, U75) of the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn also run to the city centre.

Alternatively, there is also the possibility of taking an S-Bahn (S8, S11, S28) to get to some parts of the city. At the weekend, the stops in the city districts are stopped at around 02:00 (S11, S28) or continuously (S8). There is also a suburban line (RB38) that connects the Neuss district of Holzheim and Grevenbroich and parts of the Rhein-Erft district every half hour.

A total of 27 bus lines, 1 express bus line, 2 tram lines, 3 S-Bahn lines, and 1 regional train line run in Neuss during the day, and at night on weekends and before public holidays: 6 bus lines and 3 S-Bahn lines.

  • The Rheinparkcenter in Neuss Rheinparkcenter is a shopping centr withbaround 140 shops. There are branches of all well-known brands, as well as shops that are even less well-known in Germany.
  • In the city centre of Neuss there are, among other things, many cafés, bakeries, textile shops, as well as various service providers (insurance companies, banks, doctors, hairdressers, etc.). The larger department stores include one Kaufhof branch and a C&A branch in the city centre and Tk Maxx.
  • The entire pedestrian zone of Neuss city center has a white floor. The tram now runs on a single track through the city so that pedestrians have more space. Furthermore, the old tram stops were replaced by modern and space-saving stops. The fact that the tram can travel in both directions every 10 minutes, despite the single-track route, often creates a certain fascination for people with technical sights.
  • It is all the more worthwhile to discover some small, owner-managed retail treasures. Engels spice mill, Book 8 (and the Parent company on Hymgasse 21), Ullrich cigars, Radtka library, wooden toy shop at Quirinus Münster, Italian shoe boutique, Neustraße, Antiques Rieder, Jacques wine depot, and NATO shop.
  • In addition, useful branches are to be mentioned, Barrique Neuss, opposite the Stadtsparkasse Zentrale, HEMA (largest branch in Germany), the offshoot of the original Dutch department store, Mayersche bookstore, HM, and Gutenberg bookstore.
  • The clearly best day to track down the flair of downtown Neuss is Saturday morning. After a visit to the Neusser Markt at the Quirinus Münster, it's time to sip a café on the market. On such a day, you always meet more Lückscher than agreed.
