Mongu is in Zambezi Basin and is the capital of the Mongu District.

Mongu was the capital of the former Kingdom of Barotseland and is home to the Lozi (or Barotse) people. The Baroteseland ruler, the "Litunga," had a dry season Summer Palace 12 km northwest at Lealui and a flood season palace on higher ground at Limulunga, 15 km north. The latter palace is next to Nayuma Museum, which is open to tourists.

Mongu is 610 km from Lusaka along the Great west road. the bus ride takes about 8 hours and cost $12/$15. There is also the M10 road from Mongu to Livingstone.
