Portuguese Wildfires

Should the relevant articles have a caution box at the very least? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:32, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

@ShakespeareFan00: I think so, yes. The template page talks about natural disasters, "Warningboxes can be used in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters, but should be removed as soon as the destination becomes reachable again". The UK FCO has said "A forest fire has claimed the lives of a large number of people in the Pedrogão Grande area of central Portugal and isn’t yet under control ... Forest fires are highly dangerous and unpredictable" and Travel.gc.ca has said "A large forest fire is spreading in the Pedrogão Grande area, in central Portugal ... Several people have been killed. Avoid the affected areas" The template page also says "If a government agency has listed a travel warning for an area ..., a warning box is appropriate".  Seagull123  Φ  13:57, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Which would be the relevant articles would be the next question? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:28, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Added a warning box here - Central_Portugal, please revert if it's the wrong region article, or needs to be made more specfic. Thanks. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:41, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oeste

[edit]

I believe we need to add the Oeste region to cover places from Alcobaça and Nazaré and south, as they are definitely not in the Beiras. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oeste_(intermunicipal_community) and http://www.oestecim.pt/. Any thoughts? --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 21:26, 30 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

"Other destinations"

[edit]

"Other destinations" is not a place to put cities (towns, villages, etc.) that don't fit into "Cities" per this site's 7+2 guidelines that dictate that no more than 9 "Cities" and 9 "Other destinations" can be listed in this article. Since this is not a bottom-level region article, it is a feature and not a bug not to list every village in the region; those not listed here should be listed in the article for their subregion along with those that are listed here. So which of these "Other destinations" are truly not additional towns/villages that we shouldn't list?

I think only Serra do Buçaco, a mountain range, can stay. Coa Valley appears to be in the North, not Centre. Caramulo and Luso are civil parishes, and should be included in the articles of their respective municipalities. Alcobaça, Caldas da Rainha, Nazaré, and Peniche are all cities or towns. As Caldas da Rainha is a Star article—the only one in Portugal—I think we might want to move it to the Cities section. But it's already at 9, and I don't know which to remove. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 00:49, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
If all 9 cities currently in that section are more important, it's fine not to link a star article. There are star articles about tiny towns like Childs, New York, which are not linked from the non-bottom regions in their breadcrumb trails (in this case, Niagara Frontier). Estremadura

[edit]

@Nricardo, Gomes000, Ikan Kekek: I don't think that Estremadura should be linked. It is a historical region, not a current one, and the article provides no information, context or history. It's just a page of links, many of which are red and go nowhere. It's not a useful page for travellers. Ground Zero (talk) 16:57, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ground Zero: I agree. It should be mentioned for context, but linking is not useful. There seems to be a bit of a disgreement and an edit war here... --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 18:18, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Subregion boundaries

[edit]

Three of the four subregions are not current administrative regions, and OpenStreetMap (OSM) does not have boundaries defined for them, so borders do not appear on the dynamic map (which uses OSM via Wikidata). I don't believe there's a single static map available that shows the Beiras and Oeste together, as they did not legally exist concurrently. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 19:06, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm working on a possible solution at User:Nricardo/Sandbox. It's slighty tedious but doable. I need to grab the Wikidata ID of each municipality in each of the regions. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 19:46, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm done adding the Wikidata IDs for the existing subregions in my sandbox, only to discover that a chunk of Centro belongs to none of them. They're part of the traditional Ribatejo province, but don't cover the whole thing (w:Ribatejo Province & w:pt:Ribatejo). I'm thinking perhaps create a new subregion called "Northern Ribatejo" for these places. Thoughts? --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 21:16, 22 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I plunged forward with my above proposal. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 07:25, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm. I now realize this is imperfect. Marinha Grande and Porto de Mós do not belong in the Beiras provinces. They were formerly in Estremadura province and currently in Região de Leiria, which we don't use in our hierarchy. I propose renaming Northern Minho to "Southern Central Portugal" and adding these two places. Part of the problem here is that we decided to use NUTS II as the first region level, but as the second level we're mostly using historical provinces (in Northern Portugal and Central Portugal, at least). This makes grouping places difficult, as the old provinces often cross NUTS II borders. The articles don't exist, but we can't leave gaps in our regions. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 22:05, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
As you are likely to be the active contributor who is most knowledgeable about the area, I think you can plunge forward with the changes you think are necessary. Explaining your thinking here so that others can see is a good idea. Ground Zero (talk) 23:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Done. --Nelson Ricardo (talk) 00:17, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
