Mikulov is a town of 7,700 people (2020) in South Moravia on the Brünner Straße (the old imperial road from Vienna to Brno) near the border with Austria. It is particularly worth seeing because of the listed, well-preserved city centre and the castle.

Mikulov Castle

Mikulov is a centre of Czech wine-making due to its favorable geographic location and climate, as well as its unique history. Mikulov is the centre and the namesake of the Moravian wine sub-region called Mikulovská wine region. There are twelve registered cadastral vineyard tracts within the Mikulov wine village as defined under the Czech Viticulture Act.

Other significant economic activities in Mikulov are the machine-making and clay industries, as well as oil found at the edge of the Vienna Basin.

Mikulov is located about 18 kilometres northwest of Břeclav.

By plane

The nearest airport is Brno (BRQ ^IATA).

By train

1 Mikulov na Moravě station. There is a direct train (S8) from Břeclav to Mikulov every 2 hours, taking 40 mins. If you are coming from Brno, take train to Šakvice and transfer to bus bound for Mikulov. (updated Dec 2023).

By car

It takes about 25 min to drive from Břeclav to Mikulov on Highway 40 and 1 hour from Vienna to Mikulov.

By bike or on foot

The Iron Curtain Trail leads through the city.

The South Moravian Way of St. James ends at the state border near Mikuolv, where it continues as the Way of St. James in Weinvierte.

You can cycle 1.5 hour from Břeclav to Mikulov.

Main square and sgraffito house

• Town square. The historic town square was founded in the late 16th century near the castle. It contains Renaissance houses from the first half of the 17th century. One of the most significant houses is the U Rytířů House decorated with sgraffito. In the middle of the square is a fountain from around 1700 and monumental Baroque Holy Trinity Column from 1723–1724.

• 4 Graffiti Knight's House (Sgrafitový dům U Rytířů), Náměstí 24/27. 24 hours daily. Despite its name, the exterior wall is actually not decorated with graffiti but rather multiple layers of plasters that are carefully applied onto the wall. Free. (updated Dec 2023)
• 5 Church of St. Wenceslas. Built in the early 15th century, it includes an ossuary. 
• The Baroque Church of St. John the Baptist was consecrated in 1679 and belonged to the Piarist college. The interior has valuable decoration by painter Franz Anton Maulbertsch.
• The neo-Gothic Orthodox Church of St. Nicolas was built in 1903.
• On the Svatý Kopeček Hill, there is the Chapel of St. Sebastian. The way to the chapel is lined by Stations of the Cross.

Beginning in Mikulov, the 65-km-long (40 mi) Mikulov Wine Trail winds throughout the Mikulovská wine region and is a part of wine tourism in the area.
