English official language[edit]
as far as I know English is only a regional official language (in the RAAN and RAAS, respectively) and if it does have official status nationwide, that doesn't mean it is spoken nationwide. Maybe the text of the article should be changed accordingly141.30.210.129 14:38, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
- I think you're correct about English being currently only a regional official language in Nicaragua (in those areas that once had a link to Britain 1633-1894).
- However, I'm not sure that necessarily means we should switch over to US spelling. After all, Commonwealth English is only used by a small (educated) minority in India, Malaysia and Pakistan but nevertheless we still don't use US English there. Has there been a period of overt (as opposed to subvertive, client state & Banana Wars) US rule on what is now the national territory of Nicaragua that would warrant a wholesale changeover in spelling variety? --W. - Well I wasn't talking about that (although I frankly don't know wether the law establishing English as a regional language in RAAN and RAAS talks about spelling at all) What I was refering to is that mentioning English's legal status in this article on a region where it is not spoken (apart from some who have it as a second language) is imho not helpful from a traveller's perspective. the question of which variant of English to use is interesting but I think this article's discussion page is not the place to do so...141.30.210.129 19:30, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
