Improved banner[edit]

The cropped photo that is the old banner looks dull and doesn't describe the place well. Here's the new one that fits the ratio. Jankela121 (talk) 11:49, 20 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As the creator of the existing banner, I'd like to put my two cents in. I agree the existing banner isn't colourful but I disagree it doesn't describe the place well. I only spent a couple of days in Piran, but the thing that struck me about Tartini Square (the subject of the current banner) is how it was both a major landmark of Piran, a tourist spot and a meeting/gathering place. Alongside tourists taking photos of the square and statue, I saw impromptu soccer games and band practice, which I thought was cool. Banners don't have to be pretty skyline shots -- although Piran is admittedly very beautiful -- so I thought Tartini Square would be a different and interesting take on Piran over another skyline banner.
It would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts. -Shaundd (talk) 07:11, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tartini square may be nice, but banners shouldn't be cropped pictures of 4:3 aspect ratio ones. It makes the field of view small and you don't get to explore it as much as you can the one with a skyline. Jankela121 (talk) 11:28, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the aspect ratio of the original photo matters much, it's the underlying subject that is being cropped. Both banners make trade-offs that make them less than perfect (IMO). In the current banner, Tartini Square was a bit large for our 7:1 aspect ratio so I had to crop out the ends plus lost the detail of the surrounding buildings. To fit in the Church of St George, the proposed banner crops out part of the town so the banner is about two-thirds water, which I find is a bit much. Like I said, it would be good to get more opinions as everyone sees these things a bit differently. -Shaundd (talk) 15:06, 21 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
