Travel warnings

[edit]

The fact that the UK government warns its citizens about not making bomb jokes in US airports says more about its opinion of the intelligence of its citizens than about the "danger" in doing so. This is not specific to travelling to the US; when I travelled from the US to the UK several years ago I was given exactly the same advice: security people have no sense of humor about bomb jokes. This should be common sense. Do you think we need to put a warningbox under "Get around" telling people to look both ways before crossing the street? - (WT-en) Todd VerBeek 08:27, 30 July 2006 (EDT)

In general it's a bad idea to repeatedly re-add content that others are removing - in the Wiki world if something is deemed controversial the correct procedure is to discuss it on the talk page (see Talk:United States of America#Silly Warningbox). Just like people who write in ALL-CAPS may not realize that others perceive them to be "shouting", the attempt to make a point point by re-inserting deleted text is generally considered aggressive, and I don't think that's your intent. Please discuss, and hopefully we can come to a resolution. You may also want to login as it makes it easier to communicate. -- (WT-en) Ryan 11:56, 30 July 2006 (EDT)

Wiki Etiquette

[edit]

Just to re-iterate: people here aren't reverting your edits out of spite, they're doing so in accordance with policies and guidelines that have been established over time. Re-adding reverted content without discussion is considered to be extremely rude. I don't believe that's your intent, and I can understand that it is frustrating when your work is removed, but please use the talk pages and we'll find a compromise.

In this case, for the high-level articles (such as countries) we've had all sorts of problems in the past with everyone wanting to add their favorite city. The compromise that was reached after much discussion was to limit things to 5-9 cities, and to add a comment indicating not to add others without discussion. If you really feel that Preston is one of the nine most important cities for travelers in the United Kingdom then please discuss what to drop on Talk:United Kingdom. In the mean time, feel free to add Preston to the appropriate region in North West (England), which is a more appropriate place for it. -- (WT-en) Ryan 15:33, 30 July 2006 (EDT)

See Project:Using talk pages for information about talk pages. Hope that helps! -- (WT-en) Ryan 15:39, 30 July 2006 (EDT)
